What’s Been Going On???

December 29, 2011

Hello people!  I have emerged from obscurity for a few moments to let you know that life has been continuing on the Wilson Street Urban Farm – all summer and all fall and into the winter.  Since I have been negligent about updating the blog all season long, I decided that perhaps the best thing to do is to put together a photo tour of the summer.  This will give you an idea of what kinds of activities have been happening here.  It might be a pretty long tour since our summer has been crazy busy!

Now the outside beds have been put to rest and the hoop house is protecting some winter greens.  The season has slowed down as the days have become so short.  Soon it will be time to order seeds again and the whole cycle will start over.  As it has since the beginning….

Enjoy this time of hibernation until the days lengthen and the spring beckons,

Janice

Viewing the slide show made me think of a few questions: Do you have a good spicy hot sauce recipe that you use? Do all the carrots have the same taste whether their orange or not? What kind of cheese are you making? I love reading about your farm & family. Hope you have a happy healthy new year!

Hi Patra! I will copy Alex’s hot pepper sauce recipe on the page for recipes. It’s rather vague, but that probably means there’s room for variation. It makes a seriously hot sauce, similar to Tabasco, but their’s is fermented much longer and uses their special peppers.

All carrots do not taste or grow the same. I was not impressed at all with the purple carrots. They did not grow as easily or quickly as the orange ones nor did they taste nearly as good. My CSA people didn’t care that much for them either. The yellows failed the test as well. They were fun to grow and looked really cool in a bundle, but, hands down, the oranges were the best and I’ll be growing only orange next year.

As for the cheese question, Alex has fallen into a source of cow’s milk and has been busily making goudas, cheddars, swiss, cream cheese, lactic cheese, cottage cheese, neufchatel, ricotta, and some mysost. Perhaps I have forgotten something. She’s having a blast and making others happy along the way.

Thanks for your interest and support. Happy New Year to you!

    Janice

Hi! Happy very early spring, I hope… LOVE your slide show! Would your sons consider recording their summer biking adventure here and at your Facebook site?

A happy spring to you as well! My daughter has a blog that chronicles their trip with lots of nice pictures. There is a link on the right that will take you there: cycling into the unknown. You will also find reports on her many other activities.
