Braised Turnips

August 14, 2009

I found something yummy to do with turnips.  I don’t bother with the sugar or lemon juice.

1 lb turnips;    1Tblsp butter;     3/4 c broth;   sugar (opt);  1Tbls lemon juice (opt).

Peel and slice turnips into 1/2″ slices.  Melt butter in large skillet.  Collk turnips over low heat in the butter until they have softened, ~ 10 minutes.  Add broth and sprinkle with sugar to taste.  Simmer until tender.  Uncover and let sit for a few minutes until sugar looks like a glaze.  Sprinkle with lemon juice.

This sounds interesting. If I ever get any turnips I might try it. Perhaps I’ll like turnips after all. What do you do with the greens? They are very good cooked also.

My people are not big on greens. They have endured swiss chard, beet greens, mustard greens – we tossed the turnip greens into the compost pile.

Janice and Vivian: I just sent an article to woodmasstev from The Buffalo News Titled: Plant diseases blossom in wet weather, written by Sally Cunningham. If it didn’t arrive at woodmasstev, it can be found at online. It pretty much explains anything any Buffalonian would need to know about this Summer’s bad-nasty growing season. Chris
