Hoophouse Raising Work Day

November 9, 2009

On Saturday, November 14, at 9:00 am, a hoop house is going up on the farm.  Please come and help.  Many hands make light work, as the saying goes, and we would welcome many hands to come help.  Meet us out on Wilson Street and spend a day at the farm working and learning about hoop houses.  Any and all are welcome.

At Broadway-Fillmore Alive, it appears that the hoophouse already is installed! Is a second one going up tomorrow?

If you look closely at the photo on BF-Alive, you can see some flaws – the background picture is in early spring before anything was planted in the boxes, the perspective is off a little on the hoophouse, and a few other things not readily apparent to anyone not familiar with the property . . . No, the hoophouse is not yet installed. The real one going up tomorrow will be larger and is shaped a little differently. Chris was imagining what it might look like. Drive by tomorrow and say hello and see what the real one looks like.

I am wondering if your urban farm could benefit in any way from all the reusable materials that Michael Gainer’s eastside Buffalo Reuse is recovering from the demo of two houses on the westside in that Extreme Makeover project??? Fencing? Large stones? Leftover cement?

We work rather closely with Buffalo ReUse. Mark was just there this evening gathering a few more materials for the work day tomorrow. They know us and we know them. I appreciate what they do in and for Buffalo. Great place to do business!

What Michael Gainer and his crew and you Stevenses and your urban farm are accomplishing is so very, very good for Buffalo’s east side and all of this City!

Maybe one day the names Gainer & Stevens will be synonymous with Lewis & Clark!!!

I am sending you an e-mail at

Hi Janice & Mark…can’t wait to check out the hoophouse…I can’t help myself with photoshop sometimes. 🙂

Hey! Haven’t heard from you in a long time. Photoshop is fun, but the real hoophouse looks better than the one on your picture. At least it will when the plastic comes in. I can always tell when you have posted something about the farm on your site because my readership spikes. Thanks! You give me free publicity and I appreciate it. Hope to see you out back at some point soon. Today Mark and the boys are putting up the sign that was made on Saturday. That way, when you come by, you’ll know what you are looking at!

Will you post and show pictures here when the hoophouse is actually done? We would like to stop by and see it and all your progress so far.

Covering things and helping out the various places I do in the neighborhood takes a lot of my time…I wish I had more of it. 🙂

Love the new pictures of the hoophouse and its raising!

I love stories like this because it is people like you and your family who are blessing for the neighborhood. I keep you folks and the farm in prayers.

Tom and I had a great time on Saturday. Bending and raising those poles proved to be fun, but the snicker doodles were equally delightful. I cannot wait to see what will grow inside the hoophouse.

Best wishes to you all on this fun farming adventure!

    Stevens family,

what is the most amazing part of your effort is how well you are work together as a unit. I really enjoyed so much working with your family and appreciate tremendously the efforts that you are doing to show the positive of Fillmore.

I can’t wait until you enjoy the benefits of your hardwork! And, you should post some of the Titus pictures having fun. Your children are such a joy to be around.

How is the hoophouse holding together in this serious wind?
