No More Workdays Until Next Spring!

November 4, 2010

The weather is definitely colder and the work on the farm has slowed down.  I don’t think we can keep a work crew busy for 3 hours on a Saturday anymore this year.  When we begin the outside work next spring we will announce the work schedule for 2011.  Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the farm this year.

This year saw a great deal of growth on the farm:) .   We were able to expand what we grew by adding about 12 more boxes, cover some of the costs of the farm by having the stand open twice a week and by experimenting with a couple CSAs, expand the area in which we grow by utilizing the hoophouse and adding an herb garden area, as well as plow,  cultivate, clean up and plant in cover crops the entire area south of the hoop house.

Next year is still a long ways off, and I have no idea what the future holds for the farm, but we have sure learned alot this year and plan to apply the lessons to next year’s season.  We hope to be able to offer a limited number of CSAs (we are a small operation).  We plan to have the stand open twice a week again next year.  One goal is to plant crops that need more space in part of the newly plowed area south of the hoop house.  That might include vegetables like cabbage, potatoes and winter squash.  We have talked about collaborating together with some of the other farms in the area to be able to accomplish more.  So, we will have the winter to work on all these ideas and see what we can reasonably realize come spring.

We had a beautiful frost the other morning, so my daughter took some pictures of the gardens.
